The Canned in Film Festival: Day Eight

Here’s what to watch on Day Eight:

The Red Turtle (2016) superb Oscar-nominated animation about a man shipwrecked on a tropical island who has to live his life through the crabs, birds and sea life he meets, particularly one giant red turtle. This won a prize at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section.

Sing Street (2016) 12

Perfect coming-of-age fun once again, this time set in 80s Dublin, where a boy is desperately trying to form a band in order to impress an enigmatic girl  – by casting her in their first video. It all builds up to the end of term disco and is extremely sweet and funny in all its mascara and hair gel, with a bit of Duran Duran, The Cure and Spandau.

Eighth Grade (2019) 15

Sharp, funny yet troubling insight into young life, I don’t know if this is for parents or kids – I hope both, with all the honesty and candour of modern teenage life it contains, and featuring a superb debut performance from Elsie Fisher as she plays Kayla, preparing to make a big leap in her American high school life and become a senior.
