Toby Jones has become one of our most prolific and in-demand actors. This week, he stars in Tale of Tales, the fantastical, fabulous, brilliant, bonkers and brutal compendium of Neapolitan fairytales from Italian director Matteo Garrone.
Toby plays a king who falls in love with a flea and gives his daughter away to an ogre.
The tone of Garrone’s different tales means the whole thing is out of kilter, just a step or two removed from reality. Although it’s the real Italy being used as backdrop here, the film looks as if it’s in a fantasy realm and Toby plays it just right, a blend of flawed humanity with just the right dose of comedy, or perhaps commedia.
Here, we talk about filming in Italy, his career from Captain America to Captain Mainwairing and Dobbie the House Elf, and the perils of having acting in the family blood.
