Toby Jones has carved out an intriguing career, playing roles from Truman Capote to Captain Mainwairing. He has juggled Hollywood blockbusters and is also becoming a choice for Europe’s art house auteurs. He was last in Cannes in Matteo Garrone’s mediaeval fantasia Tale of Tales but not even Toby could quite believe it when he got a call from the great Michael Haneke, two-time Palme d’Or winner and famous for his austere, icily brilliant studies of unease and lurking violence.
In Happy End, Toby stars as an English insurance broker in a growing relationship with Isabelle Huppert’s Anne Laurent, head of her family’s vast construction business in Calais, now desperate to avoid a huge compensation claim.
I met up with Toby to talk about working with these icons just before he was due to make that increasingly familiar journey up the equally iconic Cannes red carpet steps.
