Here’s your chance to win one of the great performances of the last year.
It is, of course, by the magnificent Maggie Smith in Nicholas Hytner’s film adaptation of Lady in the Van. Maggie’s imperious here, demonstrating her range and her gift for comedy, which always bristles with an odiferous whiff of tragedy.
Alex Jennings is good, too, playing duelling dual Alan Bennett’s, struggling with the ethics of letting a lady park her van in his drive and then writing about her.
The performance, first seen on the London stage, is now preserved for ever on DVD, of course, with several differences, and shot in the real road and house where the actual action took place. The whole thing’s rather delicious and delicate if you ask me, and a little subversive in its acid take on British neighbours and neighbourhoods.
To win this terrific prize simply answer the following question:
What is Maggie Smith’s character called in The Lady in the Van?
