Yet another fabulous film freebie for you, courtesy of Studiocanal.
You can win a stone-cold classic of French cinema, The Nun. It stars Godard’s muse Anna Karina, Queen of the New Wave herself, in maybe her most demanding acting performance, this time working for Jacques Rivette in his 1966 adaptation of Diderot’s 18th century novel, La Religeuse.
I saw this restored version in the Cannes Classics strand last year, and what a strange, powerful meditation on religion, faith, duty and female freedom it is. Karina is Suzanne, cloistered away against her wishes in a convent, and subjected to cruelty by a Mother Superior. Her attempts to leave are thwarted throughout in an almost surreal tale of imprisonment, with a frisson of erotic melodrama. It’s an extraordinary, hypnotic dose of 60s French cinema, definitely one to be experienced by any fan of the period.
To win The Nun on Blu-ray just answer the following question:
What is the name of the dance that Anna Karina performs in Godard’s Bande A Part?
