The Dramatics – Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get

Despite John Denver turning up in Logan Lucky (his third major movie soundtrack appearance this year after Free Fire and Alien: Covenant), I’m sticking with the music from Detroit. The band trying to make it in Bigelow’s great film are The Dramatics, who have to continue without the traumatised lead singer Larry Reed (played by Algee Smith in the movie). They eventually did break through a few years after the 1967 riot, with the distinctive soul anthem, Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get, sadly without Larry, as the film so poignantly shows. But what a great and unusual anthem it is.
