Oscar nominations live

You can watch me reveal the Oscar nominations live on BBC News at 1315 in the company of Jane Hill today.

I’ll also be on BBC PM on Radio 4 with Eddie Mair later, mulling over those nominations.

It is a fascinating year during which favourites have fluctuated with no dominant front runner emerging. And after last year’s shock, last-gasp win for Moonlight, I expect there will be a few more twists and surprises today in the nominations and, in the 6 weeks following until the ceremony itself on March 4.

My predictions for the ten best picture nominees:

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

The Shape of Water

Lady Bird

Dunkirk

Get Out

Call Me By Your Name

I, Tonya

The Florida Project

The Post

Phantom Thread

Pleasant Surprises: Mudbound, Darkest Hour

My heart tells me to put Phantom Thread in there as it’s just so exquisite and I love it. However, with Oscar predictions one should really go with one’s head, so I think Darkest Hour is more likely to get in – if the Academy use up the full 10 of their allocations.

One important things to note is that at least half the films will boast very strong female leads – the last time a female-led film won Best Picture was back in 2004, with Million Dollar Baby. But this year Three Billboards, Shape of Water, Lady Bird, I Tonya, The Florida Project and The Post are all told from a predominantly female point of view.
