As far back as I can remember, I’ve wanted to meet Karen Hill, or rather Lorraine Bracco who plays her in one of my all-time favourite movies. I had dinner with her first, so we could get to know each other. Lorraine could trust me to handle her humour and I, in turn, knew how far I could take her stories, even allowing her to refresh a couple of memories and names. Don’t forget, the audience we then faced had just seen GoodFellas in a new 4k restoration, so they were a pumped-up, Saturday night BFI crowd and the packed place was crackling with expectation. Lorraine was funny, bawdy and frank. She knew she could tease me back, but we covered everything from stories on set, her marriage to Harvey Keitel, her casting in Scorsese’s apartment and her work on The Sopranos. Turns out, half her family live in Oxford and they were there to see Auntie Lorraine. I stayed around after to drink with them all and help Lorraine entertain. After all, as any gangster knows, nothing’s as important as family.
