Matt Heineman dazzled with his documentary Cartel Land, earning an Oscar nomination back in 2016 for the depiction of life on both sides of the US- Mexico border. That opening scene in a meth factory haunts me still.
Matt’s back with City of Ghosts, a troubling, chilling doc about a band of citizen journalists who post footage of ISIS in the city of Raqqa, which the fundamentalists declared capital of their caliphate and ruled through violence, fear and criminality. These men, from a group they called Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, leaked their footage to the world then were forced to flee to Turkey and Germany to carry on their mission.
Matt follows them and takes us right into the palpitating heart of their story for a film about truth, journalism, terror and hope.
I caught up with Matt this week to find out more about how brought it to the screen.
