Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes – Wake Up Everybody

You can’t beat the Philly sound and the producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, responsible for some of the best songs and sounds ever. Teddy Pendergrass sang on some gems for them, both as lead vocalist for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes as well as solo. So many great tunes in the new documentary If You Don’t Know Me, but I’ve gone for the McFadden and Whitehead penned social anthem Wake Up Everybody, and this 1975 performance on Soul Train, where Teddy just takes it by himself, leaving the  group just sitting around on stools wondering what to do. He went solo shortly after but you can Teddy’s already gone, man, gone, and they’re just waking up to it…
