Fighting With My Family

Florence Pugh flexes her mainstream muscles in this middling British wrestling comedy. She’s a star, and I like her but even she can’t quite get this script in a full nelson.

I saw the film with a big crowd, who were neither laughing much nor cheering. It should have been a funny Rocky, with director Stephen Merchant gleefully pastiching the tropes of sports movies, montages and all that.

In the end, this doesn’t really happen and it deflates to a climax. It ducks out of really dealing with the circus of wrestling and game playing, losing the plucky British underdog story line along the way.
