Art blakey’s Jazz Messengers – Dat Dere

Quite a few contenders this week, but I have to say I’ve been humming Dat Dere to myself every day since hearing it at Venice as part of the doc I Called Him Morgan, featuring the wonderful Art Blakey Jazz Messengers line up shown here. Bobby Timmons on piano wrote the tune, Wayne Shorter’s on sax and the man himself Lee Morgan is on trumpet. You may know the vocal version that Oscar Brown did later – “Can I have that pink elephant over there?” – but this seminal bop group performance actually features in Kaspar Collins’ riveting doc, cleaned up and sounding better, but this isn’t bad for starters. The film will be at the London Film Festival in October, so all you hepcats get ready.
